Post IX: Crisis At JGM

Juan Gómez Millas (JGM) is one of the many campus that the University of Chile has, besides other faculties (Law School, FEN, Beauchef), but it’s one of the most crowded, something that leads to a variety of problems and troubling experiences.

First; the administration of the University -that decides where the resources go- have forgotten completely about this campus, investing the money on building another facilities here, instead of improving the existent structures, i think that this campus is very unfair to those students who use wheelchair or can’t walk by their own means.

Second; the power and water services aren’t always assured, specially in rough weather or stormy days.

Third; as a Journalism student, and as ICEI member, i find very troubling and unbelievable that the Institute lacks of enough technological items such as photographic and recording cameras to ensure the students needs.

Fourth; our new career program lacks of understanding of our reality, because our generation (who started to study last year, 2016) have to complete a massive quantity of credits to fulfill it, besides the administration of ICEI want to compress bigger subject programs, for a year, actually, in a semester.
Fifth; due to the construction investment, we have been affected by a significant reduction of green areas.

And sixth, i find very disgraceful that students of this campus don’t have respect for our internal cleaning staff, who wrote a letter that went public to a lot of media, exposing gross behaviours of drunk/high students partying towards them, that aren’t worthy to mention.

So, finally I have to say that JGM is one of those places that reflex in a explicit way the reality of university education in Chile, that demands out loud in every protest for resources to improve many of these situations and achieve the ‘gratuidad universal’. But also there is this last internal situation that is alarming and it can’t happen again. I like to study in JGM because there are grand and superior ideals, but there is so much to improve that makes you wonder how this campus would be if all went just fine.
